For the last four years he has channeled his creative ability torward Oil Painting. “I’ve found that my real passion is painting. My perfect day is spent sitting before a canvas, pushing paint around, playing with color and light. I want to explore and interpret any subject that I find beautiful. Being free to do that is an amazing privilege.

There will also be several new pieces by the owner, Dawn Morishige. Dawn’s Film etchings have recently been featured on HGTV, documenting the technique.

“With film etching I am able to draw attention to a particular part of a scene and/or add color to a black and white image. The etched film is then blended with resin to create a liquid, lifelike quality.”

April 12, 2008

Otis Art Institute Alumni Show!

"Revealing... Images"

K.L. Thomas   &  Dawn Morishige

OPENING RECEPTION

April 12,  2008

2pm to 7pm

Buyart Studios, 2828 East 10th Street

Long Beach, CA  90804

562-856-9095

Buyart Studios is preparing to have it’s 2008, Spring show with fellow Alumni from Otis Parsons, K.L. Thomas.

This show, “Revealing Images” will feature new artwork by the

Owner, Dawn Morishige as well a Collection of Paintings by K.L. Thomas.

The work of K.L. Thomas consists of ethereal figures layered with paint and paper. They are beautiful, haunting as well as thought provoking.

In the words of the artist:

“In my paintings, the drawings of the figure face straight ahead, the “guts” and “heart” confronting anything from fear of terrorism to overcoming personal demons. There are no faces on the torsos, making the figures universal. The parts of words or phrases that I collage onto the canvas serve as little hints or clues that point to the part of the painting (or part of us) that is the goal. This is the part we need, must overcome or work through.

These images are metaphors for our memories as well as the things we have forgotten.”

K.L. is an established artist who has shown all over California from San Francisco to Pomona, with many of her pieces in private collections across the country.

The artwork of Dawn Morishige is an innovative take on a background of photography.  The work does not fit into a singular discipline. As the viewer interacts with the work, it starts to reveal the intricacies and details of the varied media which stretch and blend to become one object

In the words of the artist:

Light is a primary consideration in the creation of my work. I print on film because of its transparency. Film allows light to move through the work and create a continually changing image. Lighting can create a powerful presence or a subdued shadow. I create work that evolves, as everything does throughout the day, in the changing light of the sun. Light enables the process of revealing the inner workings and layers of my work.”
